Riverside Health System is a non-profit, integrated network of 5 hospitals, over 500 employed providers,one of the countries largest post acute division's which include, continuing care facilities, wellness centers, etc. providing comprehensive, high quality health care services to citizens of eastern Virginia. Riverside has been the leading provider of state-of-the-art healthcare in the region since 1918.
This large regional integrated health system is looking for a proven, passionate, transformational leader in large scale aging related / chronic disease care and services. This individual would be responsible for a key operational division (Lifelong Health) that includes a 3000 employee, nationally recognized, continuum of care and for aging related strategy for the entire health system. The Lifelong Health operations are located primarily in Eastern Virginia and include various levels of residential care including CCRC’s, SNF’s, Assisted Living, and Memory Support in 13 different settings, as well as community based care made up of 4 Home Health and Hospice Agencies, LTACH, inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, fitness centers, home technology solutions, DME, and more. Additionally the division boasts a rapidly expanding multi-specialty geriatric care provider group, a research and innovation center, a number of system wide clinical improvement initiatives and a quickly growing $230 million annual budget. Riverside is unique in making a sizable, decades long, investment in an aging related mission of care and services. Specific Responsibilities: • Provide overall leadership for the aging related and chronic disease care mission of Riverside Health System. • Assume responsibility for and oversee the implementation of the short and long term strategies of the health system, the Lifelong Health Division, and all aging related services and care for the health system. • Provide operational oversight of a division of over 40 separate business units and support departments providing services covering a large part of Virginia. • Achieve profitable margins in all areas of operations by maximizing reimbursements, attaining sufficient volumes, and managing to optimal efficiency. • Ensure standards of quality are set and met in all areas through the use of accountable metrics, systematic reporting, continuous improvement action plans. • Partner with the Riverside Medical Group and Riverside Acute Care Hospitals to improve overall care to older adults and those with serious and advanced illness. • With affiliated support staff, establish and implement marketing plans and objectives and implement such plans to attain sufficient volumes for all business units of the division. Must assist with overall messaging for the health system to advance its brand as the leader in Lifelong Health. • Advance the stature of Riverside’s mission to older adults as a leader in the community, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and on the national stage with the appropriate development of applications for awards, recognition, grants, and peer group recognition. • Attain exponential growth and quality of services to achieve the status of provider of choice in all communities served through the expansion of existing services, development of new product offerings and/or acquisition of desirable competitors/operators. • Ensure that all operations are delivered in compliance with all applicable regulations, laws. • Support philosophical approaches to care and services which promote the concept of controlling one’s destiny in a place of their choosing, triple aim.
Qualifications and Capabilities • 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in older adult services, post acute care, non acute care, CCRC’s, and includes multi-facility, multi service operations. • A track record of profitable operations and/or positive margins and keen sensibilities around developing budgets and managing expenses and maximizing revenues. • Experience leading, planning and implementing successful development of new ventures, businesses, services and expansion of existing services. • A growth oriented leader. Must have the ability to manage fast, profitable growth in a healthcare sector that will be challenged by manpower, funding and other resource competition. • Experience with both “retail” type services that do not rely on third party payments as well as traditional services that are funded through some type of insurance or accountable care. Must have an entrepreneurial style. • A track record of innovation and creativity in the types or delivery methods of health care services. • Passion and values for aging related services and a culture of health care transformation. A proven track record of visionary improvements in care and care delivery for an aging patient customer base. • Understanding of need for collaborative ties and working relationships within a large integrated health care system. • Someone who is a change leader more than a shop manager. • Emotional intelligence around the inner workings of many factions of an integrated health system including physicians, acute and non acute care. • Prefer some education and understanding in gerontology. Needs to possess knowledge about the unique domains and synergies of gerontology, geriatrics, palliative care and end of life care. • Prefer understanding or experience in managed care. • Must be adept at integrating care across the entire continuum and spectrum of services. • Understands the increasing importance of quality and transparency of quality to future competitive success. • Experience in creating operational and support structure for a large multi million dollar operation. • Must have capabilities in establishing overall marketing plans and have significant experience marketing and selling products to older adults and those with serious and advanced illness. • Must be non risk averse as proven through bold actions to advance a desirable agenda/strategy – examples include: exponential growth in services; rebalancing assets including divestiture, start ups, and acquisitions; introduction of transformational models of care; partnerships and alliances with complimentary organizations, etc.
