Founded in 1989, MPHI is a unique public trust – a non-profit institute dedicated to improving community health through collaboration and the use of state-of-the-art community health practices. MPHI exists to provide critical support that increases the government’s capacity to reach residents and bring about positive change in people’s health. MPHI currently has over 350 highly skilled staff, many with terminal degrees, with central offices near the state’s capital in Okemos, MI, and a Washington, D.C. office as the home base for the National Center for the Review and Prevention of Child Deaths. At the core of MPHI is a strong partnership with Michigan’s leading universities, healthcare providers, community service organizations and local and state government, primarily the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). As a neutral and intermediary support organization, MPHI provides services to state government and 56 other clients and customers including grant writing, research and evaluation, planning, as well as learning solutions.
The new Chief Executive Officer succeeds Dr. Jeffrey Taylor, who will be retiring in early 2014 after over 20 years of successfully leading the Institute through its establishment and extraordinary growth. Dr. Taylor will be leaving the Institute on strong financial footing having built MPHI’s reputation as a nonpartisan, innovative, and highly effective partner for its 50 clients. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the new CEO will be tasked with setting the next phase of strategic direction for MPHI in the midst of unprecedented changes spurred by national health reform, coupled with changes for the state and its public health. The next CEO will establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and funders and continue to build a world-class infrastructure to support the Institute’s many program areas and projects.
The successful candidate will have considerable demonstrated experience working at the local, state and/or national level managing large and complex health-related programs or organizations. Candidates should have extensive operational, management and administrative experience and strong financial acumen. Extensive experience working with state government organizations, and a keen understanding of issues facing MPHI’s client base is also desired. Board experience is key. A Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Care Administration, Public Administration or other related discipline is strongly preferred, and a terminal degree is ideal. A minimum of 10 years of senior level executive management experience in a public health service, healthcare service, research institute or academic organization is required.
