Job description
The Executive Director (ED) is the Chief Executive Officer responsible for the leadership and management of Westminster Woods, a nonprofit organization with the following mission:
Our mission is to provide a sanctuary: for drawing closer to Christ and for spiritual reflection and growth; to encourage stewardship of our natural resources through ecological education and action; and to strengthen our relationships with one another and our diverse communities.
Westminster Woods endeavors to fulfill this mission through a variety of programs, including direct ministry, outdoor education, challenge course and facility rental.
The ED reports to and works in partnership with a board of directors, and is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. Westminster Woods is comprised of both year-round and seasonal staff. The ED's responsibilities fall into two major categories: operations management and administrative functions.
The ED leads a small team of managers and directors in running the day-to-day operations of Westminster Woods. Specifically, responsibilities in this area include:
Oversight of Operational Departments: Provide leadership and supervision to the following departments: Program (Guest Services, Direct Ministries, Environmental Education, Challenge Course), Buildings and Grounds, Food Services, Housekeeping, and office staff.
Buildings and Grounds : Providing leadership alongside the Buildings and Grounds staff in upkeep of facilities including strategic planning for improvements, non-regular maintenance, and replacement of buildings, vehicles, and major equipment vital to the operations of Westminster Woods
Program Oversight: Supervising the successful operation of all Westminster Woods Programs. In cooperation with the Board of Directors, develop a three to five year strategic plan that incorporates a long-term vision for Westminster Woods and creates unity among departments.
Marketing and Fundraising: Overseeing the execution of marketing Westminster Woods programs and identifying opportunities for new programming. Oversee current donor relations and direct an increase in fundraising efforts in coordination with Program staff as described in strategic planning.
Risk Management: Proactive management of organizational risks, insurance, staff and guest safety, and emergency planning.
Administrative Functions
The ED will provide strong direction to Westminster Woods staff with regard to budgets, human resources, staffing and organizational structure
Human Relations and Staff Management: Determining the optimal configuration of Westminster Woods staff and overseeing the administration of the HR functions.
Fiscal Management: Overseeing the preparation of annual budgets and quarterly reports to the board. Ensuring that budgeted targets are met. Directing the development of financial forecasts as part of the strategic planning process. Working in coordination with the board to implement fiscal policies.
Relationships: Building and maintaining constructive and respectful relationships with Westminster Woods groups, both internal and external (staff alumni, volunteer groups, churches, schools, local charity groups, national organizations, local political and community groups).
Significant experience (10 years) leading and managing organizations
Proven track record of managing budgets and increasing revenue growth in organizations with budgets of $1 million
Demonstrated managerial/administrative skills
Significant public speaking and public relations skills
Graduate degree preferred
Significant experience in camping, ministry and environmental education (personal or work related)
Demonstrated personal relationship with Christ
Effective interpersonal skills
