The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. School of Science invites nominations and applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Physics. The person selected for the position will be expected to begin work on January 6, 2014.
Founded in 1868, **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, non-sectarian institution of higher learning with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia. The School of Science houses the Departments of Physics, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Communicative Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Marine and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physical Therapy, and the lnterdisciplinary Science Center.
The Department of Physics offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and doctoral degrees. The main areas of research are in optics and photonics, nanomaterials, nuclear and particle physics, and medical physics. The Department of Physics has close ties with major research facilities and laboratories, namely the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, the NASA Langley Research Center, and the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Proton Therapy Institute. The current personnel consists of thirteen faculty members, four research faculty members, one laboratory supervisor and three postdoctoral associates.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to lead the Department’s efforts to support **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s transformation from its current Carnegie Foundation classification to a research-intensive university. Accordingly, the candidate will be expected to inspire and lead the Department’s faculty in the pursuit of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service; to review and update the curriculum; to write proposals for external funding; to schedule classes and advise students; to evaluate faculty; to ensure the effective operation of the department; to respond to University directives; to monitor the quality of instruction of the department; and to carry out other duties that may be assigned.
The candidate will be expected to work with the Dean, the Assistant Dean, and/or other faculty members to develop and submit proposals to funding agencies for support of educational programs and research. The Chairperson must initiate and support international collaborations that are essential to the growth of the department, as well as assist the Dean or Assistant Dean with management and administrative functions.
The Chairperson of the department serves as both an administrator and faculty member, and is expected to provide effective leadership in both roles. An earned doctorate in physics and significant college-level teaching experience are required. Although not required, candidates who have had previous experience in college administration are preferred. The successful candidate must also have excellent written and oral communication skills, a history of scholarly achievement, and the ability to organize effectively. He/she must value diversity, especially as it pertains to the merits of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
