Five $100K Jobs That Surprisingly Don’t Require a Degree!

The rising cost of attaining a college degree has made it impossible for a certain section of the society to achieve it. Most of the jobs today require a degree to start with a fair amount of experience to crack the entry-level questions in an interview. But there are a few rare careers that do not warrant a degree, and pay quite handsomely. According to the popular site, PayScale, there are at least five careers to choose from where the cream of the crop managers to earn more than $100,000.

These fields either require a high school diploma while some require technical or vocational training from competent institutes.

1. Nuclear Power Reactor Operator



One of the jobs which can guarantee you a $100K earning without a college degree is that of a nuclear power reactor operator. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this career domain is expected to grow faster than the average employment rate due to the new plant construction policies proposed by the government for safeguarding worker health and to prevent operator fatigue.

Those workers who have managed to land up with vocational degrees will find these jobs easily and also land up with more advancement opportunities. The workers have to undergo strenuous on-the-job training too.

2. Director of Security

The director of security is expected to manage his security team, security systems and specific rules and procedures that ensure safety of people and property against any sort of harm, theft or illegal activity. Duties vary from domain to domain but the director of security is required to possess a keen eye to detect illegal activities and a sound sense of judgment in case of an alarm. He is also expected to write detailed reports, interview crime or theft witnesses and also testify in court.

Many people enter these types of jobs by first starting out as a security guard. The advancement chances according to the BLS site are relatively high since the returns are good enough. Security guards who possess management skills and demonstrate their leadership qualities have better chances to move up in the field or even in their own agencies.

Licensed Massage Therapist

This career is in demand nowadays and people who have no qualms about touching an unknown person can opt for this field. Massage therapists can specialize in 80+ types of massages including those in vogue like the Swedish massage, reflexology, acupressure and the like. The employment scenario predicted by the BLS states that the field will grow faster than the average as many people are getting aware of the therapeutic effects of massages.

Elevator Mechanic


Elevator mechanics are always in demand in all types of market scenarios even during construction slowdowns, since much of the duties involve elevator maintenance tasks and essential repairs. These workers are expected to install and replace escalators, repair moving walkways and maintain all other equipment of similar nature.

Most elevator mechanics start their career after completing a four-year apprenticeship program.

Court Reporter


Court reporters are particularly expected to create meaningful transcripts of the court sermons and speeches along with the legal proceedings. Job prospects are excellent for certified court reporters and the best part is that the demand is really high. It takes at least a year to become a novice voice writer and two years to become proficient in this field.
